Approaching the debt negotiation process
Pssst…Want to know a secret? Your credit card company, the one that seems to be strong-arming you every month for more and more cash, is actually willing to help you out. Yes, that’s right. They may bother you every month for a minimum monthly payment that never quite seems to pay off enough of the bills and they may seem to be going against you, but they too want to help you out. Of course, it does mean that you’re going to be handing them a bunch of cash, but like any good creditor, they’re in it to make money. So you need to take advantage and start negotiating with your credit card company or other creditors to get the best deal possible for yourself and to save yourself some money. Be prepared to make some sacrifices but in the end you will owe significantly less money and will be in better position financially.
Standing your financial ground with creditors
Before you start the process of negotiating with a creditor, ask yourself the following question: What can get accomplished by negotiating with a creditor? Well, for one, you can probably convince them that paying off just a portion of your debt will be satisfactory for both you and them. Let’s say you currently owe a creditor $10,000 and you’ve been paying minimum payments for 3 years now and have done little damage to the debt. Chances are you’ve already handed your creditor enough money to cover a large amount of your initial debt. So convince them that by paying off a portion of that $10,000, you’ll be forking over enough money for you to save money and eliminate debt as they collect and profit on their original loan. Both parties win. But don’t let your creditor take advantage of you! For best results, seek help from a financial advisor who can give you solid advice on how much you should settle with your creditors for or what you are entitled to as a consumer.
